Botox Cosmetic Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Botox Cosmetic treatments.

Botox Cosmetic treatments at Nuvel Skin & Laser in Vernon are performed by Dr. Cornel Barnard.

Treatment is individualized according to facial anatomy, muscle movement and your goals rather than following the same injection pattern for every patient.

Botox does not have to eliminate facial movement.

The amount of movement retained is influenced by both the dose and placement of treatment. Some patients want their lines softened while retaining considerable movement, while others prefer very little movement in the treated area.

During your consultation, Dr. Barnard will discuss the result you are looking for and plan the treatment accordingly.

There isn’t one correct “Botox look.” The goal is a result that suits your face and your preferences.

Botox is commonly used to soften frown lines between the eyebrows, horizontal forehead lines and crow’s feet around the eyes.

It can also be used selectively elsewhere in the face and neck. Depending on your anatomy and goals, this may include:

  • Corners of the mouth: relaxing muscles that pull the corners of the mouth downward.
  • Upper lip: a small amount of Botox can relax the muscle around the upper lip, allowing slightly more of the lip to show when smiling. This is commonly called a lip flip and does not add volume like lip filler.
  • Jawline and neck: selected muscles that pull downward on the lower face and jawline can sometimes be relaxed to improve the appearance of the jawline and neck. This is sometimes referred to as a Nefertiti lift or tox lift.
  • Jaw muscles: Botox can reduce the activity and prominence of strong masseter muscles and may be considered for selected patients with jaw clenching or prominent jaw muscles.

Not every treatment is appropriate for every face. Assessment of facial movement and anatomy determines whether these treatments are likely to provide a useful result.

Botox temporarily reduces communication between nerves and selected muscles.

This decreases muscle activity and can soften dynamic lines caused by repeated facial movement. The effect is temporary and gradually wears off as nerve-to-muscle communication returns.

Botox primarily modifies muscle activity and is particularly useful for lines and facial changes influenced by repeated muscle contraction.

Dermal filler can restore volume, provide structural support and improve facial proportions. Filler can also influence muscle movement by changing structural support and the mechanical interaction between facial tissues.

Depending on what is contributing to the changes you are seeing, Botox and filler may be used independently or together.

Most patients begin noticing an effect within several days.

The result continues to develop over the following one to two weeks, with the full treatment effect generally assessed at approximately two weeks.

For many patients, Botox Cosmetic lasts approximately three to four months, although it can last longer in some patients and treatment areas.

Duration depends on several factors, including dose, treatment area, muscle activity and individual response.

There is usually very little downtime after Botox, and most patients return to their normal daily activities immediately.

Temporary redness or small bumps can occur at the injection sites and generally settle quickly. Bruising can occasionally occur.

Specific aftercare instructions are provided following treatment.

There is no standard Botox dose that is appropriate for everyone.

Dose depends on the muscles being treated, their strength, your facial anatomy and how much movement you would like to retain.

Some patients prefer subtle reduction in movement, while others want a stronger effect. This is discussed during your consultation and incorporated into the treatment plan.

Yes. Botox can be used in both men and women.

Men often have different facial proportions and stronger facial musculature, which can influence both injection pattern and dose. Treatment is therefore individualized rather than using the same approach for everyone.

Botulinum toxin can be used in selected patients to reduce activity of the masseter muscles, which are the large muscles at the sides of the jaw used for chewing.

This may be considered for concerns such as jaw clenching or prominent masseter muscles. Reducing masseter activity can also change the shape of the lower face, so assessment is important before treatment.

The effects gradually wear off and normal muscle activity returns.

Facial movement and lines generally move back toward their untreated state. Starting Botox does not mean that you need to continue treatment indefinitely.

There is no particular age at which someone needs to start Botox.

The decision is based on your facial movement, whether expression lines are beginning to remain visible at rest, and what you would like to achieve.

Yes.

Regular Botox treatment does not require eliminating facial expression. Dose, placement and treatment intervals can all be adjusted to maintain the amount of facial movement you prefer.
